avoiding reactivation

You need to reactivate your OS whenever Windows thinks you've made too many changes to the system. A reinstallation is "too many changes". But you can trick your computer into ignoring the reinstall if you have made no hardware change since your last installation.

Note that this is not a way to install an illegal or pirated copy of XP. It will only work if there have been no hardware changes recently.

  1. backup the WPA files

Backup the following files onto an external device (floppy, flash, etc)

    • C:\Windows\System32\wpa.dbl
    • C:\Windows\System32\wpa.bak
  2. reinstall the OS

Decline the activation request at the end of the installation procedure, and restart Windows XP.

  3. restore the WPA files

In "safe mode" restore the previously backup files back into C:\Windows\System32
